Parallel Lives Book Review

Lena Rotmensz, the author of Parallel Lives, was raised in Poland until her early teens. From the age of 14 to 21, she resided in Israel, and then relocated to the United States. She is now an American citizen but retains the insight into life in Poland during World War II and the trials and tribulations experienced by families and loved ones torn apart in this era. Her first-hand knowledge brings authenticity to the story and embodies the humanity of people — the good and the bad — as demonstrated during a time of war.

Parallel Lives is based on a true story set during World War II in Poland. The main character, Lilliana, is a beautiful and educated Jewish woman. She marries a man named Henry and has a child with him, which they name Rebecca. When the Germans invade Poland, Henry and Lilliana entrusted their daughter to Christian friends to ensure her safety. Henry is taken to a concentration camp and their family is torn apart.

With no knowledge of what happened to her husband and daughter, Lilliana (now known as Helena) was forced to live an alternate life to hide her heritage and assumes the identity of a Polish aristocrat. Helena worked for a German officer by the name of Robert. Unexpectedly, they became close, fell in love, and ended up getting married.

In the meantime, unknown to Lilliana (Helena), Henry is still alive. He reunites with their daughter Rebecca. He eventually manages to communicate with Lilliana, only to find that his wife has remarried. Lilliana misses her daughter so much. Liliana doesn’t know what to do with the situation and considers her options. Should she reveal the truth to her German husband? Will she be able to overcome her fear and reunite with her long-lost daughter?

The book is available both in paperback and Kindle eBook versions, and has been a top seller in its genre on Amazon. The Kindle version allows for a text to voice service, allowing it to be available to people of differing reading abilities.

Conclusion

Parallel Lives goes in-depth into the turmoil in various countries during World War II and the people who lived in them. This book will take readers through a myriad of human emotions including love, jealousy, fear, despair, and freedom.
