As people become more health conscious, they want to eat foods that are natural, without any additives or preservatives. Food drying is a way of preserving food through the removal of water, inhibiting the growth of yeasts, molds, and bacteria. It has been practiced in many countries since ancient times. But nowadays, you don’t have to dry your food under the sun for days. A food dehydrator makes the process of drying and extending the shelf life of food simple and economical.
The Nesco FD-75A Snackmaster Pro Food Dehydrator features the patented Converga-Flow drying system. It forces air down the pressurized chamber, horizontally across each tray, converging in the center for fast and even drying. This food dehydrator has a temperature range of 95 to 160° Fahrenheit. It can dry food items such as herbs and spices, nuts and seeds, fruits and vegetables, fish, meats, and jerky. You can set the temperature by turning the dial to the desired temperature setting. The nice thing about this product is there’s a guide printed on the unit that will help you set the correct temperatures for various food items.
The heater and fan are mounted on the top of the unit. This allows the trays to receive the same amount of air so food can dry evenly. This also means that there’s no need to rotate the trays during the process. Also, because the heater and fan are on top, you do not have to worry that juices will be dripping down into the electrical components. The Nesco FD-75A Snackmaster Pro Food Dehydrator comes with 5 trays but is expandable to 12 if you wish to add more.
However, like any other product, this food dehydrator has its share of cons. The Nesco FD-75A doesn’t have a timer. You decide when to stop the dehydrating process. It doesn’t have an on/off switch either. To turn it on, you just plug it in. To turn it off, just unplug it. Or if you want, you can plug it into a power strip with a switch.
Accessories include 2 fruit roll sheets (ideal for drying soups, sauces, and fruit rolls), 2 Clean-A-Screen flexible screens (for easy drying of herbs, spices, and potpourri), and 3 spice packets for making jerky. A 52-page recipe and instruction book is also included.
